Run Lola Run 1998

Run Lola Run

The lighting in the film changes rapidly: in one scene (image 1), the lighting is very dark with a heavy red tint, suggesting an intimate and passionate atmosphere. The props in the setting include a bed, adding to the intimacy between the two main characters in the scene. There are no visible costumes in the scene, with the view of just skin; from this we can assume that both of the characters are naked in this scene. This use of mise-en-scene makes the audience feel intrusive on the privacy of the scene.

During another part of the film, the mise-en-scene changes to a completely different scene (image 2). In this image, there is still the same feeling of intimacy between two different actors. The lighting is quite high-key, with a bright reflection on their faces, showing almost a holy sign of hope before being set up for the up-coming fall. There are no props in the scene, just the view of their faces with minimal distance between them, again showing another private scene of intimacy.

The third scene (image 3) shows a mixture of the mise-en-scene in the other two images. The lighting in the background is very high key, whereas the lighting around the actress's face is quite dark. The colour of the phone and the actress's hair are both red; the colour red can suggest danger and death, both of which occur as a regular theme throughout the film.

Although the mise-en-scene changes frequently throughout the film as a whole, the narrative stays the same throughout the film; this being in the third person but constantly follows the plot through the same main character's eyes, with the exception of one scene where we see the film from another perspective, the other dominant character in the film.

This in depth analysis of 3 screenshots taken from a film will help me in creating my own film opening by causing me to think about how I want the mise-en-scene: characters, costumes, lighting etc. to affect how the audience feel towards my opening and what atmosphere I want to present to them.

Welcome to my A Level Media Studies blog.
On this blog I will be posting all of my work and how I managed to achieve it all: from planning to analysing, evaluating to my final pieces, making a note of all of my progress and what I have learnt along the way.
